(Dawson County, GA) When you think of the staff in your local Dawson County Government most people will often think about the fire department, the sheriff’s office or even the road department. All the men and women in these departments are valuable assets to our local government. However, there are other departments that are vital to the efficient workings of the Dawson County Government that most of you will never come in contact with. One of these departments is finance.

Whether it’s a business, home, or government, you must always ensure you have the right person handling the checkbook. Without our finance staff none of our other county offices would have the resources they need to function. As a resident of Dawson County you can be proud of this dedicated group of men and women. For the second year in a row they have been recognized by being awarded the “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.” This award is presented to a select group of finance departments each year by the Government Finance Officers’ Association. Last year was the first time Dawson County had ever received this recognition, and I am extremely proud of the staff and their work to receive it for a second time.

For several years the finance department has been led by Lowayne Craig. Lowayne has and continues to do an outstanding job for Dawson County. I have worked with Lowayne for many years and she is one of the most dedicated and hardest workers I know. Over the past couple of years it has been our mission to find more effective and cost efficient ways to do business in local government. As a result of this mission, the finance and purchasing departments were recently combined to form one department. It has always been necessary for these two departments to work closely together and in the future this change will result in a cost savings to our taxpayers.

Cindy Gilleland Campbell will serve as the chief financial officer and will be the department head in charge of these two newly combined departments. Cindy has been with Dawson County for the past year and a half. She graduated as the valedictorian of her class from Dawson County High School and graduated cum laude from North Georgia College in 1994 with a degree in accounting. Cindy is a certified public accountant and prior to coming to work for Dawson County she was employed by the CPA firm Bates Carter in Gainesville. This firm specializes in governmental accounting and serves as the auditing firm for several local governments including Dawson. I am extremely confident in her ability to lead this department and to make it into an example that others will follow.

Under Cindy’s leadership and with the help of the fine staff in this department you can be assured that your tax dollars are being accounted for with the highest degree of integrity. This staff is continuously working with our other departments to find more efficient ways to operate and to improve the services we provide to our citizens. With the difficult economic times that we have faced and will continue to face over the next year, I am proud to have this dedicated staff working for our community.

If I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to call on me.
