Frequently Asked Questions
The Civil division is responsible for filing, processing, storing and retrieving civil records for Superior Court. This division also manages appeal records for Superior Court, mails court calendars to counsel and parties, prepares civil cost bills, and manages the adoption docket. All civil proceedings are scanned into the computer system. The basic costs for filing a civil complaint, domestic or non-domestic, are $205.00 Filing Fee, $50.00 per Sheriff’s Entry of Service and $50.00 Transfer Fee. Blank divorce packets are available in our office. The costs of these packets can be found in the “Frequently Asked Questions” section.

The Criminal division files misdemeanor and felony criminal cases. This process includes filing citations, accusations, indictments and all relative pleadings. This division makes reports to various state agencies. These reports include traffic, GCIC reports and the reporting of prisoners to the Department of Corrections. Other duties include processing bond forfeitures and Grand Jury Presentments. All court pleadings, all superior criminal cases, warrants and jury lists are scanned. Applications for restoration of gun and civil rights, as well as applications for expungement are available in the Clerk's Office. The Dawson County Juvenile Court is an independent juvenile court organized under Chapter 11 of Title 15 of the Official Code of Georgia. The Court is dedicated to serving the residents of Dawson County by hearing all cases involving allegations of deprivation of children under the age of 18, or unruly conduct, delinquency, or traffic violations concerning children under the age of 17 found within its jurisdiction. If, after adjudication, a child is found to be in need of treatment, rehabilitation or supervision to safely remain in the community, the court will provide access to high quality, appropriate treatment programs whenever feasible.

The Jury Information division submits names to the Jury Commissioners to be added to or removed from the jury pool, updates Traverse and Grand Jury pools periodically and summons jurors to court for jury trials. Jury Selection Clerks take jurors to the courtroom for the actual jury selection process. Their duties include: swearing an oath to jurors, reading verdicts, postponing or excusing jury service, keeping up with the number of days a juror serves and mailing their check after their service.

The Clerks Office also accepts U.S. Passport applications. You must apply in person and have with you a certified copy of your birth certificate and current photo identification and two photos. The application for passport is available on travel.state.gov.
The basic fees are as follows: Standard fee for adult: (six week turn around). Check or money order to: U.S. Department of State for $67.00 (Passport good for 10 years) Child under 16: $52.00 (Passport good for 5 years). Extra documentation required for children under 14 years old.
Expedite Fee: $60.00 (4 to 6 week turn around)
Overnight mail fees are available upon request
Execution Fee: $30.00 each check/money order
Trade name registrations are also handled in this office. Blank forms for trade name registration are available for pickup in the Clerk’s Office. The registration fee is $155.00.
Notary public applications must be submitted online and printed. They may be obtained at www.gsccca.org or click here. The cost for becoming a notary public is $162.00 and is effective for 4 years.
General Execution Dockets can be found in this division. These dockets contain liens placed against an individual. These include hospital liens, Federal and Georgia income tax liens, Lis Pendens and Preliminary notice of lien rights, and Notice of Commencements. The cost for liens and fifa’s are $5.00 for the first page and $2.00 for each additional page. Notices of Commencements are also filed under the lien category. The cost for this is $10.00 for the first page and $2.00 for each additional page.

How much will I receive per day for jury duty?
Individuals who report for jury duty will be paid $30.00 per day of service.
How long will it take me to receive my passport?
It will take approximately 6 weeks to receive a passport back. If the passport is expedited, it will take approximately 3 weeks for receipt.
How long is my passport effective?
A passport is effective for 10 years for adults (16 and over) and 5 years for children (under age 16).
How can I access the Jury Information Line?
The jury information line can be accessed by dialing (706) 344-3500 x264.
How long will my notary be in effect?
A notary is effective for 4 years.
What time is the Clerk of Courts Office closed for lunch?
The Clerk of Courts Office does not close for lunch. There will be someone in the office to assist the public from 8:00AM until 5:00PM, Monday through Friday.
When does the Grand Jury meet, and how long is the term of service?
The Grand Jury meets on the first Monday in March and the second Monday in September. Each term of service is 6 months long.
Can the Clerk of Courts Office give legal advice?
Personnel in the Clerk of Courts Office are not authorized to give legal advice. Court personnel are not attorneys. If you are seeking legal advice as to what to do with your filings, please consult an attorney. Superior Court will gladly process your completed paperwork.
How do I make a change of address?
A change of address can be made in person at the Clerk’s office, via facsimile or via US mail. The information needed is as follows:
- Date
- Defendant’s Name, First and Last
- Defendant’s Birthday
- Former Address and Phone Number
- New Address and Phone Number
- Offenses Defendant was Charged With

How can I request copies of documents?
To request regular or certified copies of documents on file in the Clerk’s office, you must make the request in writing. The request may be delivered in person to the office, sent via facsimile or US mail. The cost for copies are $0.25 per page for regular copies and $2.50 for the first page and $0.50 each additional page for certified copies.
Are blank divorce packets available in your office?
Yes, we have blank divorce packets available in our office. The paperwork does not have to be retyped. The information can be handwritten in the spaces provided. The costs for these packets are as follows:
- Divorce With No Children, No Debt, No Property: $7.50
- Divorce Without Children: $20.00
- Divorce With Minor Children: $25.00
When are cash bonds reimbursed?
Cash bonds are reimbursed to the surety/individual listed on the bond sheet approximately 45 days following the date of disposition.
